    WPHL, PHL17/ AntennaTV / ThisTV / CometTV - Philadelphia, PA is looking for a Director of Broascast Engineering and Technology to oversee, design and develop IT based broadcast systems at its studio, transmitter, news production and remote locations. This person would be responsible for planning and overseeing the selection and adoption of digital methods and systems as we transform ourselves from a traditional television broadcaster to a multi-platform IT based content generator.  This position is also responsible for overseeing the Physical plants at our locations.  Ability to manage both people and projects is critical.


    The ideal candidate for this position will have experience in planning, budgeting, managing, maintaining and troubleshooting a wide variety of IP based systems critical to our broadcast operation.


    Applicant must be proficient with complex IP systems as well as possess knowledge of digital audio / video systems and news production.  Experience with non-linear editing, broadcast station automation, graphics generation and rendering systems (and related storage technologies) is desirable. This “never stops learning” position requires the desire and drive to stay competent in the latest trends in broadcast television and related internet / web systems.


    The candidate must be highly organized with a good sense of how to prioritize deadlines and juggle multiple simultaneous objectives.  As is typical with critical IT systems, the applicant must be willing to be on call.


    Typical tasks would include:

    • Optimization of systems and methods to allow for streamlined flow of material to on-air, web, mobile and other platforms
    • Television system control room design and layout on an IT based backbone
    • Ensuring a close level of cooperation between the WPHL Engineering /Indianapolis Regional Operating center and other departments in the building and Company
    • Representing the engineering department during business negotiations for real estate, property leases, and equipment purchases
    • Overseeing the technical aspects of all news production
    • Overseeing the hiring and maintenance of the physical plant and grounds


    An innate love and understanding of IT based broadcast systems is critical as this person will be required to react quickly to changing business conditions and demands. 


    The successful candidate will have functional skill set capabilities that include a mastery of IP network concepts and layouts such as:

    • The ability to select the appropriate subnet mask for an IP network given the number of hosts and network use description
    • Understanding of the difference between a NAT and a PAT
    • Difference between and an IP address and IP port – as well as typical well-known ports.
    • Use of a packet sniffer to assist system debugging
    • Address ranges used in public and private IP address.
