    Q13 FOX/JOEtv (KCPQ/KZJO) Seattle, WA and Portland’s CW (KRCW) is looking for a Director of Technology to provide strategic planning and direction of the IT and Engineering operations of all stations.  The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the implementation and management of IT-centric technologies and operational models within a broadcasting environment; specifically in Local News and field operations.




    This leadership position, reporting directly to the Station General Manager, requires extensive experience in planning, budgeting, managing, maintaining and troubleshooting a wide variety of IP-based systems critical to our broadcast operation.  While overall leadership and management of personnel and systems is critical to this position, all station executive positions are expected to assume and perform daily operational duties with their respective teams. Candidate must be able to demonstrate successful relationship building as a client-facing, customer service-oriented leader.  

    • This position will define and implement the technical advancements necessary to operate KCPQ, KZJO and KRCW TV stations, including transmitter operations and maintenance, technical production operations, Management Information Systems (MIS), and facility maintenance. Will provide the design and implementation of systems as required for future technical enhancements.
    • Responsible for preparation and monthly accountability of the yearly budget for the Departments. Negotiates capital and operating purchases, insures that the stations are in FCC compliance, and supervises major RF transmission line repairs and realignment.
    • Responsible for facility maintenance, repairs and budgets, service contracts, inspections, building upgrades and remodels.
    • Responsible for all live production equipment and its’ maintenance, repairs, upkeep and troubleshooting. Equipment installation and maintenance of the transmitter, microwave and satellite systems, video servers edit suites, studio lighting, video routing, terminal equipment, monitors, video switchers and audio consoles.
    • Will work closely with the NEWS department to insure production quality, as well as on air and master control quality. Will provide leadership and supervision of the production technical staff.
    • Will provide structure for the safety concerns of the stations and will work with HR in state and federal required safety compliance.
    • Reports to General Manager
    • All other duties as assigned in support of the stations. 




    Applicant must be proficient with complex IP systems as well as possess a cursory knowledge of digital audio/video systems. Experience with non-linear editing, broadcast station automation, graphics generation and rendering systems (and related storage technologies) is desirable, but not required.


    Prior experience with station building construction or other facility build-outs is a plus. This “never stops learning” position requires the desire and drive to stay competent in the latest trends in broadcast television and related internet/web systems.


    The candidate must be highly organized with a good sense of how to prioritize deadlines and juggle multiple simultaneous objectives. He/she must have the ability to lead and manage multiple projects from conceptual stage through to launch, including budget tracking and reporting. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to interface with all levels of management & user community are essential. The candidate must have the ability to manage and develop the team, helping staff technicians reach their highest potentials. As is typical with critical IT and broadcast systems, the applicant must be willing to be on call and is expected to join team members in sharing this responsibility.

    • Possess the ability to analyze complex technology solutions.
    • Must be able to identify and implement new technology in a highly competitive local news market.
    • Ability to reintegrate new technology into operations and changes in media delivery for multiple platforms.
    • Ability to select, develop, and lead technical staff.
    • Previous experience in content distribution via computer networks
    • Must have excellent written and oral communication. 


    Minimum Qualifications/Requirements


    • Degree in engineering, computer science or related field.
    • Minimum 7 years of managing mission-critical Broadcast/IT environments at a television station, pably in a news environment.
    • Proven experience in managing major projects.
    • Extensive experience in broadcast systems, networking, servers, desktop, monitoring, end user support.

     Additional Requirements:
