University Advancement has an outstanding opportunity for an Editorial Assistant.

The Editorial Assistant supports and expands the UW News office's ability to effectively share the University of Washington's stories and track its media reach. The position's main focus is to assist preparing materials of average to high complexity for publication in digital format, and to help connect journalists with UW experts in several areas of research. The position also provides some opportunities for writing news releases and other stories.

This position requires a willingness to be flexible, to experiment, and to adapt to a rapidly changing media environment is essential.

The position requires a high degree of initiative in identifying the appropriate experts for media requests on certain topics, and excellent communication skills in the process of making these connections between reporters and UWs experts. The employee should be able to use creative approaches to solve complex problems while functioning with a fair degree of autonomy in decision-making.

The employee should have experience writing or editing pieces with correct grammar, AP style, flow and readability, and will join a team of writers that regularly peer-edits releases and stories before publication.

Finally, this position serves as the first point of contact for many people visiting in person or calling and emailing the UW News office.

Daily monitoring and reporting of the UW's mentions in the media, as well as regular preparation of other reports.

Answering phones and greeting drop-in visitors to the UW News/University Marketing & Communications office.

Writing blog posts and occasional news releases.

Conducting research on best practices and assisting public information specialists, as needed.

Identify stories on research and education that have the best potential for attracting state, regional, or national/international news coverage, as well as stories that are most likely to be of interest to UW friends and constituents.

Assist in deciding the best ways to make the story available to a variety of audiences, including the news media.

Handle incoming calls from members of the media-seeking experts from the UW, particularly in the areas of economics, business, communications, arts, humanities, and history and world affairs.

Develop collaborative relationships with academic and administrative units across the University, particularly in the areas noted above.

Demonstrate excellent writing and editing skills.

Serve as primary backup on planning and posting of items on the UW News social media accounts primarily Facebook and Twitter and coordinating with UW's director of social media on these efforts.

Serve as primary backup on production and maintenance of the UW News homepage and the UW Today email newsletter.

The position includes a variety of technical elements, including some photo editing, spreadsheet maintenance, basic HTML, graphics elements for various reports, PowerPoint and other software expertise.

The position requires an individual who is willing to experiment, enjoys working in a collaborative environment and has the necessary skills to manage expectations of diverse groups of faculty and administrators.

This position requires a bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field and 2-3 years' experience in public information, news media and/or public relations.

Excellent communication skills and demonstrated familiarity with the rapidly changing technology and media environment, and various platforms of news dissemination are essential.

Experience in developing multimedia products is desirable. Knowledge of how to work with digital media, including social media, and willingness to experiment are required.

Experience with WordPress, Excel, Google Analytics, email newsletter software, basic HTML and preparation of written material and photos for digital publication.

Must be an excellent writer/editor, with the proven ability to craft strategic content and messages from multiple voices, for a variety of audiences.

Experience using a variety of media including audio, video and social media is highly desirable.

Rough breakdown of duties: Media monitoring and reporting (35%); media relations, such as connecting reporters with UW experts (30%); phones and drop-in welcoming (15%); email and website production (10%); other duties (10%).

This position requires a flexible schedule as the workload and times vary considerably.

Must be willing to travel when necessary.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
